How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Filter?
Your HVAC filter protects the equipment from dust and helps maintain proper airflow. There is no single replacement interval that fits every house.
A good starting point
Check the filter every month, especially during heavy heating and cooling seasons. Many common filters need replacement somewhere around every one to three months, but the actual interval depends on your home and filter.
Why some filters get dirty faster
Pets, renovation dust, more occupants, longer equipment run times and a dusty home can shorten filter life. A thicker media filter may be designed for a longer interval than a basic one-inch filter.
Don't judge only by the calendar
Pull the filter and inspect it. If the surface is loaded with dust and airflow through it is restricted, replace it. Always install the correct size and follow the airflow arrow printed on the filter.
Can a filter be too restrictive?
Yes. A filter with higher filtration is not automatically better for every system. Excessive pressure drop can reduce airflow. If you are unsure what your equipment can handle, an HVAC technician can evaluate the filter setup and system airflow.
Want your system checked?
Preventive maintenance can catch airflow, electrical and performance problems before they become larger repairs.
